So after experimenting on some ABS Sheets I had to dremel a small hole, CA glue it and after painting it white it looks great! So for the sides of the lid...it is supposed to somewhat flow into the cap-n-back?
djrue
Yes but they won't sit flush. The left side will especially be a little wonky. The ears will cover most of that though.
Koryu1212(Dan D)
Ok...With A New Hope playing in the background...here goes! Hole punch to prevent tearing... X-acto knife for scoring... Taking my time... Dremel for teeth and eyes... Breaking out the cutting wheel... Fine trimming and sanding (found these little sanding sticks at Hobby Lobby)... Looks pretty good...quick dip in the sink... Attached the brow trim to help gauge where I want to set the holes for the rivets (I’ll have a high, curved brow since I’m emulating the “Stop that ship” helmet... Holes drilled and rivets set on both sides... And here we go! Will place and set the second rivet tomorrow...that was very stressful and I think I did ok! I could have used a second pair of hands but I adapted and overcame (with a little help from some sticky industrial Velcro holding the inside together while I drilled my holes for the rivets)! Koryu1212(Dan D)
Ok...let the madness begin! Koryu1212(Dan D)
Time to get serious...Penciled in cut lines...used blue tape around the cap to make a nice straight line...cutting wheels and bits out...Dremel with a sanding wheel taking off a little at a time...I think that’s pretty good for my first ear......right ear...done! Koryu1212(Dan D)
Switch...Again “the slow blade penetrates the shield,”...Looks pretty good...And just like doing an illustration/painting, there comes a point when it’s time to stop...Left side...Done!Drilling holes in ears...Marked on helmet and drilled...Got lucky with screw and rivet placement on BOTH sides...Fitting ears...lightly bolting down since I don’t have any flat head screw drivers or pliers...And just like that...done!Time to put my commercial art degree to use...break out the paintbrush!Shout out to Victor S! Koryu1212(Dan D)
While I was waiting for first coat to dry I painted my hovi-mics and cut down and shaped my lens...Dry enough to hit grey with the ears, traps and tears...Getting there!Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Koryu1212(Dan D)
Quick update...Installed the mesh screens on the Hovi-micsFitted them to the helmet and went ahead and added another coat of grey to the traps and tears...Fitted my lens...Test fit Tomorrow I’ll paint the chips and start the paint drips and runs...and it looks like my aker amp with iPod running the troopertalk app will all fit inside...along with my head! Koryu1212(Dan D)
Chips and runs...Penciled in the details...tore some strips of blue tape to help with the simulated tear and repair...Added the tube stripes by hand...Breaking out the abs paste for the runs...Think I’m pretty close...Tada! Let the paint cure and paste set then it’s time to finally start to get...DIRTY!!Pretty awesome...thanks to my mentor Victor S.!!Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Koryu1212(Dan D)
Ok...so here we go...following Pandatrooper’s tutorial...Applied burnt umber...Damp shirt and a lot of elbow grease...So the air here is so dry it dried out the acrylic paint a lot faster than I had anticipated...so I broke out some baking soda to help lift off the paint...Results from my first pass...I went for a more of “what is shown on screen” look...tomorrow I’m going to go back over the low spots with the “oily” mix...Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Koryu1212(Dan D)
Back from the desert hunting pesky droids...sir!Second pass with dark “oily” mix...did the helmet a section at a time starting with the back...Then the front...Damp shirt rubbing down followed by some dry sponge techniques...On to the suit! Koryu1212(Dan D)
Busy couple of days...Installed my electronics package into my lid (Aker amp, iPod Touch running the TrooperTalk app. I shot Victor a video with my helmet on running the app. He said it sounded good ) I also am lining the inside with neoprene. Last thing will be running the cabling and installing a fan kit...best thing so far is that it’s comfortable to wear! For the “S” seal...I left about an inch longer and after working it around the opening the extra material pushes against the seam creating a friction lock around the opening...which, after taking it off and on fixing and finding the “hot” spots, about 100 times, the “S” seal hasn’t rolled off at all!On to weathering the suit...first pass with burnt umber acrylic...Boots...Hit the leather pouches with some fine grit sandpaper hitting spots that would show actual use in combat (I.e; the top flaps from doing speed reloads...and other wear)...the canvas belt and shoulder straps I just used dry sponge techniques...Ok...tomorrow will be hitting the low spots with the “oily” mixture and we’ll see how that looks. Koryu1212(Dan D)
Hitting the low spots...Boots...Pauldron...myself and Kris attended a safety seminar and they gave out these stickers, which of course turned out to be just what I needed! And so it begins...Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Koryu1212(Dan D)
...and then...it’s done!Domo-arigatogozaimas to Victor S. For his guidance through this process! PunkRocketScience
Oh man... That suit was coming along so nicely and then you got dirt all over it! This is why we can't have nice things....

khazara
Great to see it come together! That weathering process looks intense but sure produces great results.

Commander_Cody
You're in for a treat with mepd...so much great info there. I've heard a lot about MEPD but I thought you had to have the pack and a DLT to join. Is that true?
