The Great Jawa Initiative 2018

I like that idea Ermer.  Very similar to the fencing mask I'm going to try this week when it arrives.
If you add a small plastic bar, glued to the mesh to support the eyes--might just work!  It'll be cooler for sure!

For those working on the Jawa initiative, make sure you sign up for this AP:

I'll be bringing my sewing machine and serger, plus paints etc for weathering.  We can crank out a BUNCH of jawas that day.

If you have a sewing machine, bring it--I'll teach anyone how to use their machines.

I won't be sewing for everyone, but I can help here and there...I have costumes to work on too!

Yes please on sewing! I just bought one. Never had one before, LOL! Time to learn a new skill set.

Got monk's cloth 50% off today, speaker mesh, mask, eye lights, bandoliers, gloves.

Off to a good start. Need boots, some black fabric to line the hood. Going to see how well coax cable will work for the hood opening. Sure I have some of that out in the garage.

This is going to be fun!

Here’s my mask for Jawa. I saw this on the forums and wanted to try out. I’m going to possibly add extra support for eyes, and fan kit. But I love the feel on the head. emoji23.png

Hey Ermer can you post a link to this? I think I like the idea of having more visibility!

Howard, I have plenty of black fabric if you need some. I'll trade you for some cable if you have any to spare :)

I have about 15 ft of coax cable. I will bring it to the AP for anybody who want some.

There's a few threads here and there on the holster:

https://www.thedentedhelmet.com/forums/threads/jawa-ion-blaster.16223/

and a host of reference images:

I plan on making a holster for my blaster also, I have a hide of leather I bought for it, will be happy to share details when I get that far.

Fingers crossed. Let’s see how good I did at prep...I trimmed the edges of my monks cloth straight, sewed back a few rows to prevent fraying, and removed the extra strands. Now it’s in the wash.
I was looking up monks cloth on YouTube and saw something on prepping it for some Swedish neddlecraft and figured the prep couldn’t hurt.

Is it okay to just throw the whole thing into the wash first? Then dye it, finally cutting it?

Yes! It is highly recommended to wash it as hot as possible first to prevent shrinking after it is dyed and cut.  Just don't use fabric softener sheets or the dye won't take as well.

So wash in hot water, and regular soap. No fabric softener.

Do we throw in dryer too? Or hang dry?

I’m doing this wash on cold. Oops. I’ll redo on hot. No big.

My plan was to seal the cut ends to prevent it fraying in the wash. Then wash, dye, and cut to pattern.

Just restarted the wash on hot. That stitching on the ends did the trick! No fraying that I can see.

I’ll do the after dye wash at the laundromat to keep the wife from killing me. And to keep my work clothes from changing colors!

Well, I learned something very important today gentlemen.  It's not the cold, but the heat that causes shrinkage.  Holy cow that fabric shrunk right up!  And I think there was enough leftover cotton in the lint trap to spin into yarn and knit a new sweater!  Next step dye.

I've got 2 bottles dark brown and one tangerine Rit dye, 10 yards of cloth (before shrinking) and salt.  My plan is to use about a 30gal container, fill with hot water, all three bottles and 3cups salt.  Does that sound about right?  Too much?  Not enough?

The general rule is 20-30 minutes.  But you don’t just let it sit.  You have to agitate and stir the fabric so that it soaked up the dye.  If you don’t it’ll wind up looking very blotchy like tie dye.
