Kylo Ren WIP by JediOutcast

Recommended Posts

Just starting a Post here to share,  going to get my WIP started in Sith Lords forum soon. I'll add a link when I start it.

Got some work done this weekend, with lots of help from my wife.  :)

Took some pics of Rev 1 today.

Trying to edit and upload to my photobucket account and post links.

Will update more later this week.

I don't think anything is approvable yet, maybe a few pieces could be made to pass level 1.

But its looking better, just thought Id share with my local Star Wars garrison to keep me motivated.

Thanks to all for the replies, suggestions and support in my hello thread.

May the fourth be with you .......always....

Punk Rock:

Yes your eyes are good they don’t match as they should for approval.   Two different fabrics, XCoser robe vs HJO hood/cowl/cape.

I started to put this all together before I found you guys and the Sith Lords.  Stutz, You, Broadsword, et al showed me the links and got me on the right path.  So now I’m trying to dial it all in as best I can.  I'll put my to do list below.  :)

BroadSword:

That's incredible, I saw your pics of doing the pleats, OMG that must have taken way more time and effort than I spent sitting on the computer ordering my inner tunic from XCoser on amazon LOL Now you look movie accurate, but I will have to mod mine to get close to approvalable.  :(

I think I might have 6 out of 11 pieces that could pass or be modified to pass,  Its way more time effort and money than I thought, but still really fun particularly when it starts to look  decent. Helmet work is next.

The pics are on my Photobucket in album:

still adding photos and need to take more as I progress.

My Current To Do List:

Helmet: Have sheer black material for cheek holes for better ventilation and accuracy.  May do the lens cover too.   This is my next objective as it gets hot.  Specs don’t say you have to cover the lens but seems people do it?  Level 1 v level 2?  Anyone got any tips on modifying a black series helmet for air flow, cutting black plastic piece to open up the holes and cover them?  I have sheer leggings for the material. LOL  Update: did holes and cover for cheeks, lens is next.

Ah here's the answers that I seek:.  Post #51 shows the moded holes and fabric mod.  Thanks to Barcode.

Did some voice changer mods that helped too.

Cape Cowl and hood:  Great work bbt Meryem ar Haptons Jedi Outfitters HJO, on etsy.  Doesn’t match my robe have to replace on or the other.  My wife seamed the cape so it would stop fraying.  We used safety pins to hold it up, were considering sewn Velcro.  Bought some black safety pins to try next.

Outer Robe: XCoser, zipper in front not well hidden, as it should only be a seam not zipper I think.  May order one from HJO to match hood etc. or make one.

Mid Coat:  DNE  Have to work this out still.  Have a few in my baskets at Etsy and Amazon. LOL  right now my inner tunic has the military style collar.

Under Tunic: XCoser, one piece, collar attached zipper in front.

Neck Seal:  Using wool Buff now. Need to order or make a correct one.  May get one made in PI in June/July.

Pants: 100% cotton denim “Coated” jeans  by INC,  should work, moderate sheen.  High fashion baby LOL

Gloves: Leather and plastic Alpine Stars.  Removed or blacked out logos,  one logo blacked out still  a bit visible on finger, need to remove it with xacto maybe.  Not accurate.

Boots: O'Neil MX boots,  dremeled out all logos, but missed one.  Not accurate.

Belt:  Won’t work. no ridges, closes in back, buckle is sewn on,  Will at least add saber clip later, as I can move it to a rebuilt or new belt.

Lightsaber: Black series (BS), metal hilt.  May Add red tubes and hot glue later.    Learning acronyms as I research ha ha

Some more progress. :)

Helmet venting and black material Mods:

Disassembled:

Drilled/cut/scraped/cleaned/sanded/melted   7 vent holes on either side, not easy (pic is 1st hole before clean up etc) :

Jet Black Sheer Nylon over lens, Black sheer leggings material over drilled out holes and mouth plate slots.  (Wife helped me pick out my first pair of nylons and leggings, more complicated than I thought,  LOL)

I need to find info on basic cosplay stuff as I'm a newbie.

Need to expand lower mouth plate holes here too.

JO,

Unfortunately we had to abandon the self made pleated under tunic. My wife is skilled with sewing, but due to a spinal cord injury, she physically couldn't do the pleats any further(too much bending of her back) . So I did go with the Xcoser pleated undertunic, but this is what we have modified, which should get me to Level 2

1. Removed collar. (collar comes from mid coat)

2. Detached the sleeves, added zippers and sewed to an Underarmor shirt. (It was very tight in armpit area so I'm waiting on more pleated material to extend range of motion)

3. Piped the armholes, side seams skirt and open front edges of skirts

4. Waxing with Otter Wax (not required per the CRLs, but it makes it more screen accurate)

From what I have read from Dawn Bright, who wrote the CRL, the only piece of the Xcoser KR costume that is approvable, is the under tunic. Granted that could be, "as-is" or "out of the box", but maybe with modification they could work. Like you said, "Outer Robe: XCoser, zipper in front not well hidden, as it should only be a seam not zipper I think.  May order one from HJO to match hood etc. or make one."

You're correct, there should NOT be a zipper down the front. Per the CRL, there is only a zipper on the wearer's left side, so you have to rip out that zipper and add to the left side at bare minimum.

Based on Dawn's suggestions and the many that I've seen, Saint's Customs is probably the best maker out there right now, followed by HJO. If you can't make the mid or outer coats, I'd go with one of those.

Hope this helps,

 Marcus
